TABLE LODGE MEETING

Presenter: Hibby Margol

Topic

Hibby will talk about his twin brother, Howard, and his initial military history, followed by their Dachau prisoner camp liberation experience.

Hilbert Margol (Hibby), a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Atlanta Georgia,  was born in Jacksonville, Fla. on February 22, 1924, the eldest of identical twin boys. Howard, & Hibby graduated High School in January, 1942 and within two weeks, enrolled as freshmen at the University of Florida. As participants in the ROTC program, they joined an Army Reserve Unit in October, 1942. A few months later, their unit was called to active duty and received orders to report on April 3, 1943.

After 13 weeks of basic training, they were assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program and ultimately were sent to the 42nd "Rainbow" Division where they manned a 105MM gun Battery. In December, 1944, they were shipped overseas, arriving in Marseille, France, in early January, 1945. Following the Rhineland Campaign in Germany. They were present, early the morning of April 29, 1945, at the liberation of the Dachau prisoner camp.
